and I can tell you from personal experience that I HAVE updated (many times) from SP1 (not 1a) to SP3, and also have done both the SP2 first then the SP3, and just the SP3, and from experience I've found that theres less fragmention and less temp files going straight with SP3, which in turn means better performance, but, like I recommend with any update of that size, the less thats open and running(especially security/AV software) the easier and better the chance of a successful install with no problems
